Melanio Oliva became a tobacco farmer in Cuba in 1886, and his family continued to farm until the Cuban Revolution. His son, Gilberto, left Cuba in the late 1950’s and travelled the world looking for a fresh start, before setting in Nicaragua in the 1960’s. Although cigars were not produced in Nicaragua at that time, tobacco was farmed and sold internationally, primarily in Little Havana, Miami where many Cuban exiles were rolling cigars. The Oliva family only started to produce cigars in the 1990’s and it was towards the end of the noughties that they introduced the Serie V Range to critical acclaim and global success. The Oliva Serie V Melanio Figurado was awarded the No1 cigar of the Year by the Cigar aficionado.
